My Approach to Provincial Advocacy
October 5, 2021

It’s time to talk about my approach to working with this provincial government. It’s time to talk about how we, as a city, will demand better.

In this moment of uncertainty, Edmontonians expect their provincial government to be there for them. And that leadership is lacking.

Our healthcare system is collapsing. Albertans are dying every day from a fourth COVID wave that didn’t need to be this bad. We have a drug poisoning epidemic claiming lives at a record rate.

Issues that hurt the most vulnerable Edmontonians—like houselessness, mental health and addictions—aren’t being addressed effectively.

The City and Council are doing the best they can, but need the province as a partner. And they simply aren’t there for Edmonton.

When confronted with supporting our economic future, or tackling social issues like houselessness, mental health and addictions, the province lacks both commitment and leadership.

As a city, we simply can’t tackle these issues alone.

I can work diplomatically with any government—as a federal minister I built productive relationships with Premiers from all political stripes. But right now, this provincial government needs to feel the pressure and strength of our whole community speaking as one.

As your Mayor, I will bring together a coalition of community leaders and organizations from businesses, non-profits, Indigenous communities, and cultural and faith groups.

That coalition will show the province the compelling power of a united, resilient Edmonton. With every media opportunity, committee hearing, program announcement, phone call, organizational newsletter and presentation, the message from our coalition will be the same.

It’s time for the province to step up and fulfill its duty to Edmontonians.

The province will hear that if Edmonton is hurting, Alberta is hurting.

That if Edmonton’s potential is held back, Alberta’s potential is held back.

That the only way to move forward is together.

When Edmonton speaks with one voice, we are too loud for the province to ignore. We will come together and demand better—that the province be an active partner as we work to make Edmonton safe, healthy and prosperous.

To build this coalition we need a calm, collaborative and experienced leader.

That is the leader I commit to being for Edmonton. I will be your relentless advocate and champion leading our community to resolve these critical issues.

And I will not be alone.
