Snow maintenance
In response to feedback received during public consultation in spring 2010, Council supported an updated winter road maintenance program to address the issue that while most Edmontonians were satisfied with the work done on major routes, more attention to residential areas was required.
The new winter road maintenance program should improve access and drivability in neighbourhoods throughout the winter. Here are the key points:
- During any given snowfall, city crews will sand and/or plow major roads, bus routes and bridges on a priority basis until the snow event ends.
- When priority routes are completed, crews will begin residential snow clearing to maintain the snow pack at five centimetres to minimize ruts during mid-winter and spring thaws.
- If it starts to snow again, the crews will return to their priority routes on major roads and bus routes until the snow event ends. Crews will then go back and pick up where they left off on their residential routes.
- In the case of consecutive snow fall events, it will not be possible to clear all residential roads after each one. The service level goal, however, will be to maintain the snow pack at five centimetres, and crews will be back in residential areas once weather conditions allow.
- Windrows will be removed on a regular basis from school drop-off zones and bus stops.
- Windrows on residential roads will not be removed; however, attempts will be made to keep them at a minimal height (no more than 30 centimetres), particularly in front of driveways.
Increased residential plowing cycles should improve winter road conditions, and keeping the snow pack to five centimetres should reduce the ruts than can occur during melting periods.
Crews can clear streets most effectively when cars are not parked there, so try to use off-street parking whenever possible.
