Redevelopment of the City Centre Airport
A once-in-a-generation opportunity
First, let me say that I am strongly in favour of re-developing the airport lands. I am proud that my Council colleagues voted to approve the staged closure and redevelopment of the airport.
We have a once-in-a-generation chance to build a world-class sustainable community where residents can live, work, play, eat, and shop. We have a chance to change the face of our city's future, and to realize our shared vision for Edmonton.
We know we need to balance growth on the outskirts of the city with new growth in the core, and this is an opportunity to accommodate 30,000 residents right in the city core. We know we need to be more environmentally sustainable – this is a chance to build an environmentally sound, LRT-oriented community.
And we know we need to be financially sustainable. Re-developing the airport lands will mean additional tax revenue in the future – this is money that will be used to keep your taxes low or to pay for the services we all rely on.
Benefitting all Edmontonians
The airport land isn’t being sold off to developers – it is being developed by the City, so we can ensure that we build a great community and that the proceeds benefit all Edmontonians. The last time the City led a development of this scale, we built Mill Woods, which has grown into a caring, supportive, diverse community that I was proud to call home for over 25 years.
