Keeping Edmonton affordable
I understand that many families are facing challenges to make ends meet, and I believe that it is important to keep Edmonton as affordable as possible. My Council colleagues and I have worked hard to try to keep tax increases as low as possible while providing the services Edmontonians want and need.
However, our city has needs. Before 2007, the City hadn’t kept up with the needs of growing areas of the city or older neighbourhoods. As a result, we have since made major investments in these areas. We’ve established a dedicated fund to renew ageing neighbourhoods, and we have approved funding for important and necessary services for growing areas, such as a new transit centre and fire station for the Meadows, a new Mill Woods Library, a new library and recreation centre in the Meadows, and a new fire station in Ellerslie.
I will continue working to keep Edmonton an affordable city. Last year’s tax increase was held to inflation plus population growth, and I will work to achieve that again. However, I believe that most Edmontonians expect high quality services to be available in their communities, and I will always be prepared to invest in meeting the needs of communities.
