Celebrating diversity

Arnim Joop, Mill Woods Mosaic

Watch the video: my views on diversity

I believe that the strongest communities are those that embrace diversity. This means celebrating cultural differences, learning from one another, and working together to achieve common goals:

Celebrating our cultural communities

Promoting diversity means working with cultural communities to build a stronger city together.

For example, in 2010 my colleagues and I provided City funding for a joint project with the Korean community to build a cultural centre, which will provide cultural and meeting space for people of all backgrounds. I have also worked closely with other cultural groups since 2007 to help find meeting space, to hold community events, and to overcome challenges.

This kind of partnership enriches all of us, and I believe the City should support cultural groups wherever it can.

Fighting racism and discrimination

Since being elected in 2007, I have been proud to act as Council’s leading voice in promoting diversity and combating discrimination.

I am Council’s representative on Racism Free Edmonton. This is a group of partners from all sectors, including the city, police, the school boards, libraries, and the provincial and federal governments, which have come together to fight racism and discrimination. This is part of a nationwide initiative.

Over the next three years, Racism Free Edmonton will hold educational events, fight for inclusive workplaces, and continue to combat racism wherever it arises

Councillor Sohi,

It is good that you claim that Edmonton should be inclusive and racism free.

You are the Councillor in Edmonton. Just a month ago, a person in middle management in City of Edmonton was fired, because of his health and because he belongs to Indo-Canadian community.

You don’t want to probe about this issue because you think it is the responsibility of administration to deal with such issues. Do you think administration will admit that they fired someone because of his race?

You are the voice of public, voice of Edmontonians, you have every right to probe and know about the issues.

Do you know how many people in City of Edmonton senior management belong to visible minorities, none, zero!

That guy was fired because of his race, though he was one of the most talented person city ever hired (Three master degrees), City of Edmonton will never give a good reference for him, so he will never get a job.

City has destroyed someone’s family, someone who belongs to Indo-Canadian community.

You don’t even want to discuss this issue with City administration; you are the Council’s representative on Racism Free Edmonton. If you can’t save this person’s family, this person’s career, who will?

In that case, anything else you do to make Edmonton racism free would be nothing but window dressing.
