Sexual Exploitation Week of Awareness: March 7-11, 2011

Today I proclaimed the Sexual Exploitation Week of Awareness in Edmonton on behalf of Mayor Mandel and City Council. Sexual exploitation is taking selfish or unfair advantage of any person for sexual purposes or gain. It happens in Edmonton, and it affects us all.

The week of awareness runs March 7 to 11, with sessions on human trafficking; sexual exploitation and the law; sexual minority groups; cultural community groups; and the Prostitution Offender Program. The events are organized by the Sexual Exploitation Working Group of Edmonton, a collaboration of REACH Edmonton, City of Edmonton Community Services and community organizations. I have had the opportunity to serve as Council's representative in this partnership since I was elected.

The events during the week of awareness recognize that there are many persons -- children and adults, men and women and trans-identified people -- who experience sexual exploitation. This week asks us all to inform and empower ourselves to combat sexual exploitation in our city.

For details about the week of awareness, please visit the events calendar at  www.REACHedmonton.ca.
