Go Canada Go Celebration

A Celebration of Canadian Athletes

What: Olympic celebratory campaign. A collaborative campaign between Mill Woods Town Centre, Southgate and St. Albert Centre- the celebration features the unveiling of a maple leaf structure that will be displayed on the Canadian athletes hospitality floor of Shaw Towers in Vancouver during the games, after it is signed by customers at all three shopping centers.

City Council Public Hearing on LRT Routes - continued

Council continues debating LRT routes to the southeast and west

When: Dec 15, 2009, at 9:30 am

What: On December 15, Council will continue its discussion of LRT routes to southeast and west Edmonton. A Public Hearing was held in November, and because questions were raised by Council and by the public, it was necessary to schedule another meeting.

The routes could be decided on December 15, but if Councillors need more information, the decision may not take place until the spring.

Immigration and Settlement Community Gathering

A chance for immigrant communities to share feedback and learn about on City services

What: The City of Edmonton regularly hosts Community Gatherings to give immigrant and refugee communities a chance to connect directly with City staff to share feedback, express needs, and learn about services offered by the City.

I have had the honour of representing Council at these gatherings before. It is essential for the City to reach out to our immigrant communities, and I am proud to be a part of this work.

Youth Emergency Shelter Society 5th Annual Cornflake Breakfast

To kick off the Youth Emergency Shelter Society (YESS) annual fundraising campaign

This events marks the launch of the YESS annual fundraising campaign. This year's goal is to raise $1 million. YESS provides valuable service to youth with nowhere to turn, and the new location in the old Armoury building will provide day programming and connect youth with other supports.

Multicultural Arts Bash

It features workshops in African drumming, visual arts, and breakdancing, as well as ethnic food from six countries, presentations by local artists, special guest performers, DJs, and live music.

Breakfast with the Guys (benefitting Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters)

Joining leaders in business, entertainment, sports, culture, and social advocacy to combat domestic violence

When: Nov 23, 2009, at 7:00 am

What: The 5th Annual Breakfast with the Guys brings together community leaders to help understand how to take action against domestic violence in Alberta. Domestic violence is not a women's problem - it is everyone's problem, and male and female leaders need to take a stand against it. Join Mayor Stephen Mandel, keynote speaker Patrick Laforge, and MC Gord Steinke.

National Addictions Awareness Week (NAAW)

A week to raise awareness about addictions and community resources

When: Nov 16, 2009, at 12:00 pm

What: Addiction is an important issue in Edmonton. Over 36,000 Albertans sought treatment for addictions in 2007-2008, and we know addictions contribute to crime, poverty, and homelessness. This week is a great opportunity to raise awareness of the supports that exist in our community to fight addiction.

There will be events all week, culminating with the NAAW-scars gala, an event featuring commercials shot by youth to promote addictions-free lifestyles.

AUMA Convention

The Alberta Urban Municipalities Association (AUMA) represents cities and towns across Alberta

What: The annual AUMA Convention is City Council's best opportunity to meet elected leaders from across Alberta. At the Convention, AUMA passes resolutions calling on the Province to address municipal priorities. This has resulted in important work and better working relationships.

Edmonton Chamber of Commerce - Small Business Week - Grand Opening

A week to honour and celebrate the contributions of small businesses

What: It is my pleasure to proclaim Small Business Week on behalf of the City of Edmonton.

Every October, one week is set aside to recognize the contributions of small businesses, which make up about 80% of the businesses in Edmonton. Small business is the economic lifeblood of our city, and the adaptability of these businesses will help Edmonton weather the economic storm and emerge stronger than ever.
