About Amarjeet
On Council
Amarjeet was elected to City Council in 2007. He is proud to act as City Council’s leading voice on multiculturalism and community safety and crime prevention. He represents Council on the new REACH Edmonton Council for Safe Communities, which is driving a bold new vision for crime prevention in Edmonton.
Amarjeet was also Council’s voice on the Taskforce on Community Safety, on Safedmonton (which brought community partners together to address addictions, sexual exploitation, youth violence and other issues), and on the Edmonton Police Commission. Highlights of his work include: launching the Good Neighbour Awards program, hosting a Week of Awareness to Prevent Sexual Exploitation, supporting a Drug Education Toolkit for Parents, and developing a Home Safety Checklist for citizens.
Amarjeet also represents Council on Racism Free Edmonton, a group of partners in the government, policing, education, and community sectors who have come together to combat racism and discrimination. Racism Free Edmonton is part of a national coalition of cities combatting racism.
In addition, Amarjeet represents the City of Edmonton on the Canadian Urban Transit Association Board, the Capital Region Board's Transit committee (Alternate), and the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association.
In the Community
Amarjeet has a strong background in community advocacy. After a high-profile murder in Mill Woods, he founded the Mill Woods Crime Council, a citizens’ group that has successfully worked with police to improve crime prevention and enforcement. The Mill Woods Crime Council focuses on getting citizens involved in their community, and brings positive energy to crime prevention. This has been seen as a model for similar initiatives across the city. Amarjeet has also served on the Meadows Community League Neighbourhood Watch.
Being a champion for neighbourhoods has always been important to Amarjeet, and he has served on the Southwood Community League, the TD Baker Parent Advisory Council, and the Mill Woods Canada Day Celebration planning committee. Amarjeet has also been a prominent leader on city and provincial issues, volunteering with Public Interest Alberta, the Centre for International Alternatives, and the Canadian Labour Congress.
Amarjeet works actively with a wide range of communities in southeast Edmonton. He has promoted strong relationships among cultures through the Police Chief’s Indo-Canadian Liaison Committee, the Punjabi Cultural Association, and the Punjabi Arts Association.
